Interview with Luis Mariani

Mariani recalls that Noly began in 1976 as a bakery and gradually expanded its range to include products such as empanada pastries, pasta, tacos and sliced bread. He speaks of the difficult times Argentina has faced and how, in such circumstances, the company drew strength from hard work, family and internal commitment. He emphasises that at Noly, employees are regarded as ‘one big family’ and an open-door policy is promoted to foster a sense of belonging; he mentions that one of the driving forces has been a culture of hard work: he himself worked up to 14 hours a day to consolidate the business. He also highlights the importance of family succession: his daughter Claudia plays an active role in the business, which has helped to preserve the company’s identity and vision.

He explains that the company began exporting its products to markets such as Spain, Miami, Mexico, Germany and Saudi Arabia as part of an international growth strategy.
He points out that, in order to achieve this growth, it was essential to maintain quality and innovation, and to recognise that taking a step back is sometimes necessary in order to regain momentum.

Finally, he states that although the national context is complex, SMEs like his will continue to be a source of employment and development, provided that commitment, innovation and a people-centred approach are maintained.
